Minister commits to securing Presidential signature on the Presidential Compact

The Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS) held a strategic meeting with the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources to formerly engage her since her assumption into her office. The meeting was held to discuss collaborative efforts and key initiatives aimed at improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in Ghana

The discussion covered key priorities, particularly the WASH Presidential Compact, and the need for sustainable WASH financing. CONIWAS emphasized the importance of finalizing the compact, which includes the establishment of the National Sanitation Authority. They also addressed their collaboration with the Water Resources Commission on establishing a Water Fund to address issues like sand mining and pollution, with the goal of reducing water treatment costs. Emphasizing the importance of sector coordination meetings, CONIWAS expressed the desire for stronger collaboration among all relevant ministries before the end of the year. Finally, they informed the Minister about the upcoming MOLE WASH Conference, set for October 7-11, and extended an informal invitation for her to participate.

The Honorable Minister expressed her excitement about the partnership with CONIWAS and recognized the coalition’s significant contributions to the sector. She acknowledged the support provided by CONIWAS, especially during the recent launch of the water policy document, and expressed her heartfelt gratitude for their advocacy efforts.

The Minister reaffirmed her commitment to improving water accessibility and sanitation throughout Ghana. By prioritizing water access in both urban and rural areas, the Minister aims to ensure that clean water is readily available from every tap. She highlighted her primary focus on securing the President’s signature on the Presidential Compact, which she views as essential for achieving these objectives. Given her limited time in the ministry, she identified this as a key priority to accomplish by the end of the year.

CONIWAS expressed confidence in the Minister’s ability to deliver on this critical issue. They believe the Presidential Compact will be a cornerstone of her tenure, marking a significant step forward in achieving universal water access and sanitation.
