The Coalition of NGOs in Water and Sanitation (CONIWAS) Ghana has reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing sanitation services across the country following a courtesy visit to the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs (LGCRA), Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim. The meeting, held on 13th March 2025, provided an opportunity to formally welcome the minister to his new role and discuss collaborative efforts to improve sanitation nationwide.

During the discussions, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim expressed his appreciation for CONIWAS’ advocacy and dedication to sustainable sanitation solutions. The meeting focused on key priorities aimed at addressing Ghana’s sanitation challenges and advancing national policies in the sector.

Among the critical issues discussed were:

  1. The rollout of the Presidential Compact on WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene).
  2. The finalization of the review of the Sanitation Policy.
  3. The establishment of the National Sanitation Authority (NSA).
  4. The implementation of the Open Defecation Free (ODF) Roadmap.
  5. The development of financing strategies for sanitation.
  6. The reintroduction of National Sanitation Day.
  7. The creation of the National Sanitation League.
  8. Strengthening multi-sectoral collaborations to enhance sanitation initiatives.
  9. Elevating the Sanitation Units of local assemblies to departmental status.

The engagement marks a significant step toward strengthening government-civil society partnerships in tackling sanitation challenges. CONIWAS Ghana remains optimistic about the outcomes of this discussion and is committed to working closely with the Ministry to implement these initiatives effectively.

As the nation moves forward with these reforms, stakeholders in the WASH sector anticipate positive changes that will contribute to improved public health and sustainable sanitation practices across Ghana.
